The Criminal Investigations Section is divided into five different units:
General Investigations is responsible for investigating general crimes against people and property that are not domestic-related. Some of the crimes against people that the unit investigates includes aggravated assaults, robberies, kidnappings, and current and cold case homicides. The crimes against property that the unit investigates includes aggravated burglary, theft, vandalism, embezzlement, and fraud. Through the investigative process, members of the General Investigations unit interview witnesses and victims and interrogate suspects to prepare cases for prosecution. Within the General Investigations Unit, there are specialized investigators who handle Juvenile Services and the Sex Offender Registry. The unit is comprised of one Investigator Sergeant, five Investigators, and the Evidence & Supply Technician.
The Juvenile Services Office is responsible for the investigation of all crimes against children and juveniles and is also responsible for crimes involving juvenile suspects. Some examples of the cases handled by the Juvenile investigator are child abuse and neglect, child sexual abuse, missing and abducted children, and any crime that might involve juvenile suspects of victims. The Juvenile Services office may also prepare juvenile petitions for delinquent or unruly juveniles to be issued by the Juvenile Court of Montgomery County.
The Sex Offender Registry is maintained by an investigator of the General Investigation section. Tennessee State Law requires the registration and annual or quarterly report of sexual offenders. The Special Victims Unit investigates and prosecutes cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, cybercrimes and cyberstalking, and provides services for victims of these crimes. The unit also manages the Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Response Team. The unit is comprised of one Investigator Sergeant, three Investigators, one Unit Coordinator, the Victim/Witness Coordinator, and a number of volunteers and interns. School Resource Officers enforce laws on local middle and high school campuses. In addition to providing a law enforcement presence, they investigate criminal activity and make arrests as necessary. The SRO unit consists of one sergeant and fourteen deputies. More information is available on the School Resource Officers page.
Environmental Enforcement is responsible for responding to call illegal dumping, littering, and hazardous spill calls. The unit consists of one Investigator Sergeant, four Deputy Sheriffs who are part of the Litter Abatement Program of the Montgomery County Workhouse, and one Reserve Deputy Sheriff. Fugitive Investigations is a liaison position with the United States Marshals Office. Led by an Investigator Sergeant, fugitive apprehensive are supported through other sections and units of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, including the Patrol section, other Criminal Investigations units, and through Criminal Warrants in the Courts & Process division.
