The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for maintaining security and order inside all
courts in session in the county. These courts included Chancery, Civil and Criminal
Divisions of both Circuit and General Sessions Courts, and Juvenile Court. The following
are some of the duties of the Court Deputies: maintain order, assist prosecuting
officers, handle evidence, prisoners and witnesses, take defendants into custody,
track court dates for inmates, and attend to sequestered jurors.
These deputies handled 15 sequestered jury trials for a total of 19 days sequestered.
In 2004, Court Deputies handle 110,265 matters before the court.
Safety and security for areas outside the court room. The deputies utilize technology
such as IRIS SCAN, metal detectors and X-ray machines to monitor and control access
to the building. Deputies routinely discover and make arrests for contraband, such
as drugs and weapons, that court visitors had on their person.
