The role of the Internal Audit Department is to provide an objective, independent appraisals of procedures and other operational systems in departments as a service to all levels of management and the Montgomery County Board of County Commissioners. These appraisals help ensure that Montgomery County Government's assets and resources are adequately protected, departments are operating effectively and efficiently, and complying with applicable policies.

Here are some examples of how the Internal Audit Department acts as a service to management:

• Evaluate operations for ways to improve effectiveness and efficiency

• Help comply with various local, state, and federal policies and regulations

• Ensure management has the proper controls or safeguards in place to protect themselves, employees, and the county

• Provide experience, technical knowledge and advice regarding systems, policies, and procedures

• Conduct investigations when some concerns or irregularity exists.

To help accomplish these mutual goals, the Internal Audit Department will furnish analyses, recommendations, counsel, and information concerning the activities and programs being reviewed.
