  Course Description
  The Family & Friends CPR program contains information on how to perform the basic skills of CPR in adults, children and infants and how to help an adult, child or infant who is choking. This classroom-based, video and instructor-led CPR course offers families, friends and community members the opportunity to learn basic CPR in a dynamic group environment.

  Audience
  The Family & Friends CPR program is for family members, friends and members of the general community who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card. This program is specifically designed for those who prefer to learn in a group environment with feedback from an instructor. This program also can be a non-credentialed option for teaching CPR to middle and high school aged students in school settings. This program can be used in a variety of creative ways to teach lifesaving CPR skills to communities.

• CPR for the Healthcare Provider

  Course Description
  The BLS Healthcare Provider Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. The course is intended for certified or noncertified, licensed or nonlicensed healthcare professionals.

  Course Length - Approximately 4 1/2 hours

  Intended Audience
  Healthcare providers, such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician's assistants, residents or fellows, or medical or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants, police officers, and other allied health personnel.

First Responder Education

• Initial First Responder Course

  Course Description
  An Introduction to the Emergency Medical Field, with an area of study concentrating on providing basic first aid, CPR, AED, bandaging, splinting, basic airway management, oxygen administration, basic human anatomy and physiology, emergency obstetrics, environmental emergencies, EMS operations and medical and trauma patient assessment.

  Goals
  - Successful completion of Course Studies
  - Successful completion of Course Quizzes, Tests, and Finals
  - Appropriately and Effectively complete all requires skills
  - Successful completion of the National Registry First Responder Certification Exam

  Co-Requisite
  American Heart Association – Health Care Provider Course Completion Card or American Red Cross – Professional Rescuer Course Completion Card.

  Skills Evaluations
  All skills shall be completed to the instructor’s satisfaction and according to the state of Tennessee and National Registry regulations. Successful completion of your skills is mandatory prior to being eligible to sit for your certification exam.

  Teaching Methods
  Teaching will be via Lecture, discussion, reading assignments, audio visuals, and practical demonstration.

• First Responder Continuing Education Units for Renewal

  Course Description
  First Responder’s are allowed to recertify with 10 contact hours, however those hours MUST be in certain areas. These areas are as follows:

  - Preparatory: one (1) hour consisting of:
  

  • EMS Systems
  • Well being of the First Responder
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Human Body
  • Lifting and moving patients

  
  - Airway: two (2) hours
  - Patient Assessment: two (2) hours
  - Circulation: one (1) hour
  - Illness and injury: two (2) hours one being medical and one being trauma
  - Children and childbirth: one (1) hour
  - Rescue and EMS Operations: one (1) hour
  - Successful completion of Course Quizzes, Tests, and Finals
  - Appropriately and Effectively complete all requires skills
  - Successful completion of the National Registry First Responder Certification Exam

Continuing Education for EMT’s and Paramedics

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  Course Description
  The American Heart Association's Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course is totally redesigned for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of hospital. Through the ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation.

  ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

  Course Length - 13 ½ hours approx., including breaks

  The course is designed for medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency.

  ACLS Recertification Course

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

  Course Description
  The completely redesigned American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support course is based on new science evidence from the 2005 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC and a new teaching methodology. The goal of the PALS course is to aid the pediatric healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. Skills taught include recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; the systematic approach to pediatric assessment; effective respiratory management; defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion; Intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

  Course Length - 14 hours approximately

  Intended Audience
  For pediatricians, emergency physicians, family physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies.

• Pediatric Education for Pediatric Providers (PEPP)

  Course Description
  The PEPP Course is sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and is designed to meet the minimum standards related to the pediatric portion of the US Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum for EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic providers. The American Academy of Pediatrics is not able to award continuing education credits for completion of the PEPP Course. PEPP Course Coordinators need to work with the appropriate agency in their region to arrange for securing continuing education credits for the participants. If not certain about how to secure continuing education credits in your state, contact the EMS office in your state.

• Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)

  Provider Course
  The PHTLS Provider course is designed to be an intensive 16-20 hour experience. It is available to all levels of prehospital care providers, and programs are typically attended by Emergency First Responders (Fire, Police, Search & Rescue, etc.), EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses (including Industrial based Occupational Health Nurses), Physicians, and Physician Assistants.

  The course is scenario-based, with lectures and interactive skills station components meant to enhance the prehospital care providers’ knowledge, and further develop the critical thinking skills required to effectively treat the trauma patient in the field.
